This work was composed on a commission from trumpeter Mark Ponzo for inclusion on his compact disc The Trumpet Music of Verne Reynolds (Mark Masters 4843-MCD). Each of the five movements is meant to be performed on a different instrument. The performer should have access to trumpets in C, B-flat, and E-flat, a Flugelhorn, and B-flat Cornet. The performer may present selected movements in lieu of playing the entire work.

Verne Reynolds Fantasy-Etudes for Trumpet and Piano

This is the first of five sets of Fantasy-Etudes Reynolds composed, written for the composer’s friend and colleague Barbara Butler. It consistis of ten movements; Reynolds has noted that the piece may be excerpted and a small number of movements played as a shorter set. This publication contains photocopies of the composer’s holograph to accommodate some non-standard notation. The solo trumpet part is left unbound to facilitate page turns.

This three-movement work is one of the last pieces Reynolds wrote before retiring from composition in 2002. As with many of his later works, it bears no dedication and was apparently written to fill a perceived gap in the instrument’s repertoire.

The set consists of two computer-engraved performance scores which follow Reynolds’s original format, i.e., unbound to facilitate page sliding. The scores are printed on 65 lb., 11 x 14 card stock.

Boston-area composer and church musician Terry Halco originally composed this piece for two trumpets and organ. At the request of several players, he prepared a version that can be played by one trumpeter. Both versions of the wind parts are included with the set.

Irish composer Graínne Mulvey was commissioned by Trinity College, Dublin, to write a fanfare for the ceremony celebrating the centenary of the first woman being accepted as a student at Trinity College. She utilizes some extended techniques, including ½-valve glissandos for both players.

Verne Reynolds Sonata Concertare for Horn and Piano

Reynold’s final piece for horn was completed in 2001. Although it bears no dedication, he encouraged his former student, Tina Sung, to present the first performance on a faculty recital in her native Taiwan. An exciting composition, the Sonata Concertare exploits the timbral and technical resources of the horn.
Jeffrey Richmond Horn Sonata No. 1

Richmond composed this work in 2008 while completing his doctoral studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The Sonata No. 1 was premiered by UNL Horn Professor Allan Mattingly, who also performed the piece at the 2009 International Horn Society Workshop in Macomb, IL.

This work was composed in 1987 on a commission from the Wisconsin Brass Quintet in celebration of the ensemble’s fifteenth anniversary. This piece should not be confused with the earlier Suite for Brass Quintet. The 1987 Brass Quintet is an exciting composition of formidable difficulty that belongs in the repertoire of every professional quintet and university faculty quintet. The Brass Quintet has been recorded by the Wisconsin Brass Quintet on their compact disc Fabrics, Summit Records DCD 164.
